How to smoke on a bbp pit.?

I am thinking of getting me a smoker box, to put wood chips in, for my bbq pit. i need to know where do u put the box? do u put it in the charcoal, next to the charcoal? do i put water in it? please help with any "smoking" tips you have to offer.

always smoke w/ water in a bowl or container below the meat.

light charcoal on one side of the pit; lay meat on the other side, NOT directly over coals. You CAN lay an alum. pan of wet (soak in water about an hour) wood chips over the charcoal to make smoke.

You will probably have to add coals as time goes on, esp. for a large item like brisket or turkey.

I'm not sure you need a "smoker box" addition... you could do it w/ what you have.

Remember to allow a little air in by the coals, and a little air hole at the top, so the smoke circulates. No air means dead charcoal and no smoke.
